Columbia Books on Architecture and the City is an imprint that aims to expand the ground of architectural discourse, whether through timely interventions into contemporary debates or sustained inquiry into topics that reframe the built environment in productive ways. Distributed by Columbia University Press and bringing together designers, scholars, planners, artists, theorists, and curators, often working outside of the expected formats of their fields, they focus on books that ask urgent questions about what architecture is and what it does. They amplify new voices while reflecting on those who’ve shaped the field in vital ways, and to publish books that think deeply about the implications—whether political, ecological, cultural, or disciplinary—of architecture in its broadest sense. The imprint’s commitment to print is paired with experiments in digital and hybrid publishing methods, including the Avery Review, a monthly journal of critical essays on architecture and Avery Shorts, an experiment in email-based discourse.
