In recent years it has become more common to recognize the traditional homelands of the indigenous peoples of a particular area through a land acknowledgment. This practice is intended to encourage greater awareness and understanding of the history of indigenous peoples and their territories.
A land acknowledgment led by Heather Miller (Wyandotte), executive director of the American Indian Center of Chicago, Les Begay (Navajo) AIC Board President, Feather Marsh (Ojibway) Artist, Santiago X (Choushatta) Artist, Fawn Pochel (First Nations Oji-Cree) followed by a discussion on how this practice should be a call to rethink one's own relationship with the environment and the histories of all peoples.
